CHR 2/650 BRAKING CHOPPER FOR EXTERNAL RESISTORS


A braking chopper is used for limiting the DC link voltage of a frequency converter-based motor drive. When an induction motor slows down, it acts as a generator and feeds energy back into the converter, hence the DC link. By transmitting the braking energy of the drive to a resistor, the braking chopper allows the excess to be dissipated as heat.

Braking choppers are typically applied to motor drives with high inertia loads such as trains, cranes, centrifuges, elevators, conveyors, large fans, etc.
